About Me

I'm a 7th grade science teacher, a dad, a coach, I like to read books, be outside, run, play basketball, play video games, mountainboarding, making metal art, playing with electronics, sarcasm, zombies, bow ties, wearing casual shoes with dress clothes, laughing, and watching the lights come on when students in my class get it. I'm not just saying that to sound like a teacher. I get a little hyper when someone finally gets it, especially after we have worked hard to understand it. Which, is why I love teaching difficult things to people. The bigger the challenge, the greater the reward. I was born in 1977, which makes me on the edge of digital native. I remember life before computers, but I don't ever want to go back. I love learning new things, especially when they involve technology. I have fun with my students and we learn lots together. I get mad somedays at my students behavior, and I'm not a perfect teacher. My class is full of talking, and sometimes we get off topic, but we are almost always learning. I don't like rows and I love working in small groups. I love learning, but hate grades, and feel like the way we do formal education is boring (and that includes my own class at times).  I never understood the point of half of what we did in school, but knew how to play the game so I rarely got less than an A. I misspell stuff, even in teaching and I'm OK with that. Sometimes when I send e-mails I don't capitalize the first letter in the sentences. Ultimately, people are the reason we do what we do and not an obstacle, and because of this I feel that the way we do school needs to change. How do we change this big mass we call education. Blow it up and start over (that's mostly a joke). I have little clue but that doesn't stop me from trying, starting with me.
